p>\n Overview\, an exhibit of mezzotints and aquatints by Art Werger\, ope
ns April 9 in Fairbanks Gallery\, Fairbanks Hall\, on the Oregon State Univ
 ersity campus\, in Corvallis\, Oregon. A reception for the\n artist will b
e held at 6pm\, Wednesday\, April 11 in the Memorial Union Joyce Powell Lea
dership Center\, followed by a free public lecture at 7pm in the same venue
.\n</p>\n<p>\n Werger’s work explores themes of time/space and the natur
e of representation as shared experience. Through the media of etching and
mezzotint\, these pieces attempt to place the viewer into an\n active rela
tionship with the image. The artist says\, “The subject is presented in a
realistic manner but often observed from an oblique aerial angle\, forcing
the viewer into an unusual role\, not\n unlike the omniscient narrator in
a work of fiction. From this position\, the environment lays out flat in f
ront of the viewer. The viewer is privy to the work below\, yet curiously r
emoved from it.\n As a cinematic device\, this abstract angle allows for a
n overview of the scene as well as an introduction to the characters within
the environment. This is intended to suggest a narrative which\n ultimate
ly requires the viewers’ participation.”\n</p>\n<p>\n Werger is curren
tly a Professor of Art and Foundations Director at Ohio University in Athen
s\, Ohio. He earned a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin-
Madison in 1982\, and a Bachelor\n of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island Scho
ol of Design in 1978. He has been the recipient of numerous grants includin
g a Southern Arts Federation/ National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts T
ouring\n Program Grant in 1990-1992.\n</p>\n<p>\n Werger has exhibited hi
s work extensively and internationally\, including: The12th Norwegian Inter
 national Print Triennials\, Fredrikstad\, Norway\; The 4th Kochi Internatio
 nal Triennial Exhibition of\n Prints\, Kochi Prefecture\, Japan\; “Agart
