Artist's Talk 7pm
Overview, an exhibit of mezzotints and aquatints by Art Werger, opens April 9 in Fairbanks Gallery, Fairbanks Hall, on the Oregon State University campus, in Corvallis, Oregon. A reception for the artist will be held at 6pm, Wednesday, April 11 in the Memorial Union Joyce Powell Leadership Center, followed by a free public lecture at 7pm in the same venue.
Werger’s work explores themes of time/space and the nature of representation as shared experience. Through the media of etching and mezzotint, these pieces attempt to place the viewer into an active relationship with the image. The artist says, “The subject is presented in a realistic manner but often observed from an oblique aerial angle, forcing the viewer into an unusual role, not unlike the omniscient narrator in a work of fiction. From this position, the environment lays out flat in front of the viewer. The viewer is privy to the work below, yet curiously removed from it. As a cinematic device, this abstract angle allows for an overview of the scene as well as an introduction to the characters within the environment. This is intended to suggest a narrative which ultimately requires the viewers’ participation.”
Werger is currently a Professor of Art and Foundations Director at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He earned a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1982, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1978. He has been the recipient of numerous grants including a Southern Arts Federation/ National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts Touring Program Grant in 1990-1992.
Werger has exhibited his work extensively and internationally, including: The12th Norwegian International Print Triennials, Fredrikstad, Norway; The 4th Kochi International Triennial Exhibition of Prints, Kochi Prefecture, Japan; “Agart World Print Festival”, Slovenia; “Forty Eight Contemporary American Printmakers”, Beijing, China June-July; Contemporary Art Center Mendoza, Buenos Aires, Argentina; and “The International Exchange Exhibition of Prints,” Seoul, South Korea;
