SUMMARY:Multiple Uses of (Multiple) Imputation at the National Center for H
 ealth Statistics
DESCRIPTION:To illustrate several types of problems in which imputation for
missing data can be used\, this talk will describe several recent or poten
tial applications of imputation at the National Center for\nHealth Statisti
cs\, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Two of the applications ar
e to traditional missing-data problems\, one involving missing income data
in the National Health Interview\nSurvey and the other involving missing da
ta on body scans in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. T
wo other applications have the goal of imputing values for an item of inter
est not\nincluded in a survey by using responses to a related item along wi
th models based on a smaller "validation" survey. One such application invo
lves bridging the transition from single-race reporting to\nmultiple-race r
eporting in the U.S. census\, and the other seeks to improve on analyses of
self-reported data from the National Health Interview Survey. The final ap
plication uses mixture models to\nidentify questionable birth weight/gestat
ional age pairs in U.S. natality data\, for which gestational ages can be m
easured with error\, and seeks to impute more plausible gestational ages. I
n all of\nthe applications\, multiple imputation or related techniques are
used to reflect the extra variability due to missing data. The talk will pr
ovide a brief introduction to imputation and multiple\nimputation and will
highlight goals\, techniques\, and results of the applications. Dr. Schenke
r has served at the US Census Bureau\, the UCLA School of Public Health\, a
nd the National Center for Health\nStatistics. He is an expert on multiple
imputation and is an outstanding public speaker.

SUMMARY:Food for Thought Lecture - G. David Tilman
DESCRIPTION:Concerns over rising oil prices and greenhouse gases from fossi
l fuels have caused biofuels to be touted as a solution to both our energy
and climate change dilemmas. Current biofuels\, however\, offer\nno real so
lution.<br />\n<br />\nCorn ethanol and soybean biodiesel provide small ene
rgy gains\, but both directly and indirectly release more greenhouse gas th
an fossil fuels. Moreover\, any food-based biofuels made by converting\nrai
nforests\, peatlands\, savannas\, or grasslands release substantially more
carbon dioxide than the annual greenhouse gas reductions that these biofuel
 s provide by displacing fossil fuels.<br />\n<br />\nIn this lecture\, ecol
ogist David Tilman suggests solutions: Biofuels can be produced from perenn
ials grown on agriculturally degraded lands without displacing food product
ion or causing loss of\nbiodiversity through habitat destruction. Similarly
 \, biofuels made from waste biomass\, manure\, corn stover\, forest slash\,
or thinnings offer immediate and sustained advantages and net energy\ngain
s.<br />\n<br />\nG. David Tilman is Regents’ Professor and McKnight Pres
idential Chair in Ecology at the University of Minnesota\, and Director of
the university’s Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve. His research\nexp
lores how managed and natural ecosystems can sustainably meet human needs f
or food\, energy\, and ecosystem services. He is an elected member of the A
merican Academy of Arts and Sciences and the\nNational Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Tilman was the Founding Editor of the journal <em>Ecological Issues</e
m>. His many awards include the Ecological Society of America’s Cooper Aw
ard and its MacArthur\nAward\, the Botanical Society of America’s Centenn
ial Award\, the Princeton Environmental Prize\, and a John Simon Guggenheim
Fellowship. He has written or edited five books and published more than 20
0\npapers in peer-reviewed literature that made him the world’s most high
ly cited environmental scientist for 1990–2000 and for 1996–2006\, acco
rding to the Institute for Scientific Information.
