Davis is Professor of the History of Science at Messiah College in Grantham\, Pennsylvania. Best known for editing (with Michael Hunter) T he\nWorks of Robert Boyle (1999-2000)\, his research has focused on the int erplay of science and Christianity during the scientific revolution. Davis DESCRIPTION:In February 1922\, William Jennings Bryan’s popular assault o n evolution went upscale\, when the New York Times published his e ssay\, “God and Evolution.” This drew almost immediate responses\nfrom biologist Edwin Grant Conklin\, paleontologist Henry Fairfield Osborn\, and the famous Manhattan pastor Harry Emerson Fosdick. Shortly after this\, th e essays by Conklin and Fosdick were reprinted\nas the inaugural numbers in what would become a series of ten “Popular Religion Leaflets” on “Sc ience and Religion\,” published between 1922 and 1931 by the American Ins titute of Sacred Literature\, a\ncorrespondence arm of the University of Ch icago Divinity School. Shailer Mathews supervised the series and wrote one of the pamphlets himself\; Fosdick later wrote a second. The other six were written\nby prominent American scientists: Robert A. Millikan\, Arthur Hol ly Compton\, Kirtley Mather\, Edwin Frost\, Michael Pupin\, and Samuel Chri stian Schmucker. Although the pamphlets were underwritten by\nJohn D. Rocke feller\, Jr.\, and distributed very widely\, they are virtually unknown to both historians of science and historians of religion. This paper tells how the pamphlets were found\, sketches\ntheir history\, and briefly analyzes their highly interesting content.

The day culminated in the Stonewall Rebellion\, when\npatrons bar ricaded the police inside the Stonewall Inn during one of the frequent poli ce raids on gay bars. The ensuing riot paved the way for the beginning of t he modern gay rights movement\; it has\nbecome "the day the gays fought bac k." Based upon actual events\, the comedy follows the exchanges between the se characters in the hours leading up to the police raid. It documents the historic\nbeginning of a long lasting civil right movement. Originally from the Pacific Northwest\, Doric Wilson was a participant in all three nights of the Stonewall riots. He helped pioneer the Off-Off\nBroadway theatre mo vement\, was a founding member of Circle Repetory Theater and TOSOS II (The Other Side of Silence.) I n this seminar\, Dr. Hu will address these issues. He will first present a theoretical framework to examine how\ncross-country environmental externali ties in a period of globalization may cause global market failure in intern ational trade. He will then present some CGE model results\, which suggest that China\nhas a huge trade surplus in monetary terms\, a large deficit in environmental terms.\n

\n Dr. Hu will also discuss possible policies to mitigate negative environmental impacts and to enhance positive environmen tal impacts by trade. Finally\, Dr. Hu will share his experience in WTO and \n several other bilateral trade and environment negotiations and his rece nt experiences in developing government policies that impose exporting tari ffs in energy and pollution intensive products in\n China.\n

\n Abstrac t: The objective of this dissertation is to examine the role of firm hetero geneity in the agglomeration process and the latter’s effect on regional economic development. In the first essay\,\n the effect of trade liberaliz ation on agglomeration of high- and low-productivity firms is analyzed. By extending a new-economic-geography model\, I find that international compet ition disperses\n low-productivity firms to less-developed regions. Tradin g with advanced countries also leads to dispersion of economic activity. In the second essay\, I empirically test the hypothesis that\n high-producti vity (exporting) plants in Chile self-select to locate in large markets. Pl ants’ productivity is computed to obtain regional productivity-distributi on measures. Then\, I find that\n high-productivity (exporting) plants ind eed locate in a region where other plants in the same industry agglomerate\ , industrial structure is diversified and market size is large. In the thir d essay\,\n I identify the mechanism by which human-capital spillovers occ ur at the plant-level and examine the relationship between spillovers and a gglomeration of high skill-intensive plants in Chile. I\n employ plant-lev el production functions incorporating the absorptive capacity hypothesis. E mpirically\, in 5 out of 8 manufacturing industries\, the benefit from spil lovers is large to high\n skill-intensive plants. Public health authorities in the United Kingdom (UK) subsequently found Polonium-210\ncontamination at a number of locations in and around London. UK authorities determined that c itizens of 52 countries other than the UK may have been exposed to this con tamination\, and asked the\nCenters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC ) to contact approximately 160 such individuals in the United States. CDC's response to this public health threat will be presented\, as well as\nreco mmendations for more effective ways to address future events of this nature .

\nDr. Charles Miller joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in January 1992. He is currently Chief of the Radiation Stud ies Branch\, Division of Environmental Hazards and Health Effects\,\nNation al Center for Environmental Health. In this position\, he develops goals an d objectives that integrate organization and environmental public health pr ograms on the potential effects of exposure\nto radiation and radiation-rel ated health research\, including providing leadership for the agency’s ra diological emergency response and consequence management efforts. Previousl y\, Dr. Miller worked\nwith the Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety\, Oak Ridge National Laboratory\, and Anderson (Indiana) University. His primary area of expertise is the transport and dose assessment of radionuclides\nr eleased to the atmosphere\, and other facets of environmental radiological dose assessment. He has authored or coauthored over 100 journal articles\, laboratory reports\, and meeting papers. Dr. Miller\nis a member of the Nat ional Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements\, and he is a member of the Health Physics Society. Dr. Miller holds a B.S. in Physics/Math fro m Ball State University\, a\nM.S. in Meteorology from the University of Mic higan\, and a Ph.D. in Bionucleonics (Health Physics) from Purdue Universit y.
