involvement in the bombings of government buildings during the\n1970s\, he
became a federal fugitive for seven and a half years\, until 1977. Sponsors
of Rudd's appearance include the OSU Peace Studies Program\, the Departmen

SUMMARY:"Boy I Am"
DESCRIPTION:While female-to-male transgender visibility has recently explod
ed in this country\, conversations about trans issues in the lesbian commun
ity often run into resistance from the many queer women who\nview transitio
ning as a "trend" or as an anti-feminist act that taps into male privilege.
Boy I Am is a feature-length documentary that begins to break down that ba
rrier and promote dialogue about\ntrans issues through a look at the experi
ences of three young transitioning FTMs in New York City as they go through
major junctures in their transitions\, as well as through the voices of le
sbians\,\nactivists\, and theorists who raise and address the questions tha
t many people have but few openly discuss.

SUMMARY:The Austin Entrepreneurship Program Fellow Event
DESCRIPTION:Jesse Coombs is one of today's leading adventurers. With calm c
onfidence and a friendly smile\, Jesse explores the most intriguing and rem
ote corners of the earth. Jesse redefines the limits of\nadventure travel a
nd whitewater kayaking as he pioneers first descents on unthinkable and unt
amed creeks\, rivers and waterfalls. Jesse\, a paddler on the Jackson Facto
ry Team\, is renowned among the\nextreme sports community for his achieveme
nts. He has been in magazines such as: Men's Fitness\, Kayak Magazine and N
ational Geographic Adventure Magazine\, and is a featured paddler on\norego
nkayaking.net and jacksonkayak.com. Jesse graduated from Rutgers University
in New Jersey and earned a Master’s in Business Administration at Oregon
State University. After working in corporate\nAmerica for ten years\, Jess
e decided to quit and focus full-time on real estate investing. Now\, Jesse
divides his time equally between his real estate investments and professio
nal kayaking. It may\ncome as a surprise that Coombs began kayaking only 10
years ago. But since then\, he has made countless class V/VI first descent
 s in his kayak over 80-foot-plus waterfalls\, canyons\, gorges and rivers.\
nSuccess as a kayaker\, film producer\, and investor were not enough for Co
ombs. He is making a social impact by starting a nonprofit corporation in h
is name to steer kids away from illegal drugs. The\nJesse Coombs Foundation
introduces children and teens to outdoor sports\, showing them that "the g
reatest excitements in life are achieved without drugs."

SUMMARY:Food for Thought Lecture - Daniel J. Kevles\, Yale University
DESCRIPTION:Innovation in fruits turned from a pastime of gentlemanly amate
urs into a commercial business by the middle of the nineteenth century. The
innovators grew eager to obtain what they increasingly\ntermed the rights
of “originators\,” or what we can recognize as intellectual property pr
otection (IP)\, for their new fruits. Yet how could the innovators uniquely
identify their inventions? Special\nnames were inadequate\, since nothing
prevented a thief from selling a fruit under a different name\, and verbal
descriptions were inevitably inexact. A number of innovators thus tried to
protect their\nfruits more precisely in colored lithographs and watercolors
. The practice gave rise to an industry of fruit illustrations that soon co
mprised an abundant and often exquisite body of commercial and\,\nin connec
tion with a kind of registration system\, federal art. However\, registered
illustration proved ineffective for IP protection in fruits\, and horticul
tural innovators resorted to alternative\narrangements that included pricin
 g\, contracts\, legislation\, and in our own day\, patents on genes.<br />\
n<br />\nDaniel J. Kevles\, the Stanley Woodward Professor of History at Ya
le University\, teaches and writes about issues in science and society past
and present. He is currently writing a book on the history\nof innovation
and ownership in the stuff of life. His previous works include <em>The Balt
imore Case: A Trial of Politics\, Science\, and Character\; In the Name of
Eugenics: Genetics and the Uses of\nHuman Heredity\;</em> and <em>The Physi
cists: The History of a Scientific Community in Modern America.</em> He has
also published numerous articles\, essays\, and reviews in scholarly and p
opular\njournals such as <em>The New York Times\,</em> the <em>New York Rev
 iew of Books\,</em> <em>The New Republic\,</em> and <em>The New Yorker</em>
 . Kevles has received various honors\, including a Guggenheim\nFellowship\,
a Page One Award\, the Watson Davis Prize\, and the History of Science Soc
iety’s George Sarton Medal for career achievement.
