SUMMARY:Horning Visiting Scholar Lecture - Lawrence M. Principe
DESCRIPTION:After flourishing for over half a millennium in Europe\, transm
utational alchemy virtually disappeared within less than a generation. What
happened? Where did the subject and its practitioners go?\nThis lecture ap
proaches these questions\, looking particularly at the French scene and the
role of professionalized scientific societies in the process. A grander qu
estion however involves how we\nshould rewrite the long-term history of che
mistry to account for our new understanding.<br />\n<br />\nLawrence M. Pri
ncipe is the Drew Professor of the Humanities at Johns Hopkins University i
n the Department of the History of Science and Technology and the Departmen
t of Chemistry. His research\ninterests focus on early modern alchemy/chemi
stry\, particularly chrysopoeia. His publications include <em>The Aspiring
Adept: Robert Boyle and His Alchemical Quest</em> (Princeton\, 1998) and (w
 ith\nWilliam R. Newman) <em>Alchemy Tried in the Fire: Starkey\, Boyle\, an
d the Fate of Helmontian Chymistry</em> (Chicago\, 2004)\, the winner of th
e 2005 Pfizer Prize. He is currently completing a book\nprovisionally entit
led <em>Wilhelm Homberg and the Transmutations of Chymistry at the Académi
e Royale des Sciences.</em> In 2004\, he was the inaugural winner of the Fr
ancis Bacon Award for the\nhistory and philosophy of science
