SUMMARY:LL Stewart Scholar Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Milo Koretsky\, CBEE. In an interactive\, hands-on m
anner\, this workshop will introduce instructors to a tool developed with f
unding from a LL Stewart Faculty Scholar Grant\, the Web-based\nInteractive
Science and Engineering (WISE) Learning Tool. WISE is designed to utilize
the College of Engineering’s Wireless Laptop Initiative so that every stu
dent in a class is simultaneously\nengaged\, creating a learner centered cl
ass based on active learning. WISE can be used to develop activities that p
robe for conceptual understanding and deeper level thinking. It allows real
-time\nformative assessment by the instructor. After the students have subm
itted a response to an activity\, the instructor can review a summary of th
e results with the class. Depending on the class\nresponse\, the instructor
can choose an appropriate method (e.g. peer instruction\, instructor expla
nation) to reinforce or correct the response. In this workshop\, participan
ts will learn how to use\nWISE in their classes including: creation of ques
tions\, delivery in class\, and strategies for concept-based instruction.
