SUMMARY:"Young Worker Health and Safety – Reducing Workplace Injuries and
  Illnesses"
DESCRIPTION:Featured speakers this year will be Laurel Kincl\, University o
f Oregon and Diane Bush\, University of California at Berkeley. Research in
dicates that young workers are injured at higher rates than\nadults—despi
te the fact the workers under age 18 are prohibited from doing the most haz
ardous types of work. Young workers tend to receive minimal or inadequate t
raining on safety and health issues\nand have unique risk factors for injur
 y. Lack of awareness of these issues and appropriate resources extends to e
 mployers\, parents\, educators\, and health-care providers. Other states ha
ve established\npartnerships\, resource centers and programs to build state
capacity for efforts to improve young worker safety and health. Learn abou
t the scope of the problem and what young worker safety\ninitiatives are un
derway in other states. We will focus on what is currently happening in Ore
gon\, including approaches for improving safety and health awareness among
young workers and their\nemployers\, and initiatives being planned by the n
ewly formed Oregon Young Worker Health and Safety Coalition. Finally\, we w
ill discuss what research is needed to improve young worker injury data and
\nto evaluate the effectiveness of intervention approaches. Please respond
via e-mail the number of personnel that are planning to attend from your or
ganization. A catered lunch will be provided\nimmediately following the pre
sentation. Please consider parking at the OSU Football Stadium where a numb
er of "PAY AND DISPLAY" Parking Meters are located. You can then take the O
SU Shuttle to the\nMemorial Union and take a short walk to Kidder Hall.
