SUMMARY:Geological Storage as a Carbon Mitigation Option
DESCRIPTION:Prof Celia's areas of research include ground water hydrology\,
  ecohydrology\, numerical modeling\, contaminant transport simulation\, and
multiphase flow physics. Ongoing projects include pore-scale\nnetwork mode
ling to study interface dynamics\, reactive transport\, and scaling in poro
us media systems\; computational studies of plant responses to variations i
n soil moisture in water-stressed\necosystems\, with a focus on application
s in sub-Saharan Africa\; and studies associated with large-scale injection
of CO_2 into deep brine formations as a possible mitigation strategy for t
he\natmospheric carbon problem. The carbon work is part of a large multidis
ciplinary effort at Princeton known as the Carbon Mitigation Initiative. Ce
lia is chair of the Department of Civil and\nEnvironmental Engineering at P
rinceton University and served for 10 years as editor of the journal /Advan

SUMMARY:Assessing the Response of Streams to Contemporary Forest Practices:
DESCRIPTION:Over the past several decades in response to environmental conc
erns\, the annual harvest in the timber-producing states of the Pacific Nor
thwest was reduced and forest practices were improved.\nHowever\, there is
still concern that the intensity of contemporary forest practices used to m
anage commercial forest land is not environmentally sustainable. To address
this concern\, the Watersheds\nResearch Cooperative (WRC)\, under the admi
nistration of the College of Forestry at Oregon State University\, is condu
cting research on the impacts of contemporary forest practices on aquatic\n
ecosystems. This research is carried out in three paired watershed studies
in western Oregon: Hinkle Creek\, the Alsea Study\, and the Trask Watershed
. The purpose of this conference is to report on\nthe state-of-the-science
of the environmental effectiveness of contemporary forest practices. The co
nference will feature reports on preliminary results\, current status\, and
future directions for the\nthree WRC paired watershed studies. Also\, resu
lts will be presented from similar research from throughout the Pacific Nor
 thwest. For more information\, visit\nhttp://oregonstate.edu/conferences/pa

ell as supporting hydrology and hydraulic coverage. The lecture topics foll
ow a\n natural progression of technical topics\, using a lecture format\
, to give an understanding of analyses methods and their applications. Exer
cise sessions are used to give experience in the\n application of method
s to a variety of types of stream restoration-alteration projects. Some lap
top computer work will occur during exercise sessions.\n </p>\n <p>\n
This course is intended for technicians\, practitioners and managers with v
arious technical backgrounds who work with stream projects or review propos
als and permits for such projects. Attendees\n should have basic environ
mental and technical analytical skills and have a general familiarity with
spreadsheet use and website data access\n </p><a href="http://cce.oregonst

SUMMARY:2008 James M. Craig Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr. Rod Mackie\, Dept of Animal Sciences and Divisio
n of Nutritional Sciences\, Institute for Genomic Biology\, University of I
llinois The development of alternatives to fossil fuels as\nenergy source i
s an urgent global and national priority. Green plants capture solar energy
and fix carbon as renewable cellulosic biomass that has the potential to c
ontribute to fuel needs\, though\nmany obstacles remain before this can be
realized. One of the major limitations to plant biomass conversion is the e
fficient enzymatic degradation of cellulosic and hemicellulosic polymers in
plant\ncell walls. In the guts of grazing animals\, microbes are primarily
responsible for the production of these digestive enzymes. Better understa
nding of the capabilities of these microbes is the key to\nimproved biomass
  utilization.
