SUMMARY:2008 James M. Craig Memorial Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr. Rod Mackie\, Dept of Animal Sciences and Divisio
n of Nutritional Sciences\, Institute for Genomic Biology\, University of I
llinois / Herbivory in lizards is rare. Cultivation- and\ncultivation-indep
endent molecular approaches have been applied to the detection\, identifica
tion and quantification of gut bacterial populations in iguanas endemic to
the Galapagos Islands. The\nresults strongly support the contention that th
ese unique herbivorous lizards are largely dependent on the presence and me
tabolic activities of a resident bacterial population in order to hydrolyze
\nand ferment plant polymers that are indigestible to the host.
