SUMMARY:COE Faculty Reception
DESCRIPTION:<p>\n The president of the OSU chapter of Tau Beta Pi\, Warren
Gray\, invites the College of Engineering’s faculty to a light reception
with cake and punch to honor and encourage pre-professional school\n stud
ents in the COE who have exhibited academic excellence. The reception is ho
sted by the OSU chapter of Tau Beta Pi in conjunction with the COE Office o
f Undergraduate Programs. Professors who\n are past members of Tau Beta Pi
or are interested in becoming involved are encouraged to attend.\n</p>\n<p
 >\n <strong>If you plan to attend\, e-mail Warren Gray (graywa@onid.orst.e

SUMMARY:Observations of Southern California Waves and Wave-Driven Processes
DESCRIPTION:<blockquote>\n <p>\n <strong>Speaker: Dr. Robert Guza</stro
ng>\, Scripps Institution of Oceanography at University of California\, San
Diego.\n </p>\n <p>\n Development and testing of real-time models for
wave-driven processes along the Southern California shoreline will be desc
ribed. Waves in southern California are monitored with a network of\n di
rectional wave buoys\, and nowcast and forecast with 1-hr time steps and 10
0-m alongshore resolution http://cdip.ucsd.edu/. Wave energy levels vary al
ongshore\, depending both on shadowing from\n remotely generated swell b
y offshore islands and refraction by local depth contours. On most beaches\
, the most energetic waves are from winter North Pacific storms\, although
some beaches are more\n exposed to southern swell. I will outline Team C
DIP's work coupling the regional wave network to simple models for wave-dri
ven surfzone currents\, beach sand level changes\, and more. Model\n cal
ibration and failure mode definition are ongoing.\n </p>\n <p>\n <em>S
ponsored by the Miles Lowell and Margaret Watt Edwards Endowment\, College
 of Engineering.</em>\n </p>\n <p>\n Seminar begins at 4:00\, followed
by social and refreshments at 5:00.\n </p>http://cce.oregonstate.edu/\n</b
