Delay Performance Evaluation of IEC 61850 Standard in Transmission Substation
Substations are a crucial element in the transmission and distribution power systems. The primary equipment (power transformers and high voltage switching equipment) are used to transfer and transform electrical energy by stepping up or down the voltage. In order to protect the substation and primary equipment, secondary equipment’s (IED’s) are used to control, protect and monitor them, which is known as SAS (Substation Automation System).

IEC 61850 standard is a candidate for SAS as well as for Smart grid (SG). The performance evaluation of this standard has been carried out at distribution system at all levels (process, bay and substation). At transmission substation, where data rates are high and there is a low latency requirement, this standard has yet to show its performance under those conditions. In this work, IEC 61850’s delay performance is evaluated at transmission substation between different bays in the case of one outgoing feeder’s failure.
