The New Oregon Nearshore Strategy: A Call to Collaborative Action

Oregon’s State Wildlife Action Plan was first published in 2006 in two volumes, of the Oregon Conservation Strategy and the Oregon Nearshore Strategy. The Nearshore Strategy is the marine component. It focuses on species dependent on saltwater that live in Oregon. After a decade in use, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) updated both documents and launched an online web-enabled version in 2016. The new web version is designed to engage Oregonians in conservation of our fish, wildlife and their habitats. It brings more than 300 pages of text to life with pictures, videos, and interactive features that allow readers to search for topics of interest about Oregon’s fish and wildlife species, their habitats, and many of the conservation issues they face. It also seamlessly integrates the two parts of Oregon’s state wildlife action plan into a seamless whole. I will introduce the Nearshore Strategy web-site. We will look at the changes made to the Nearshore Strategy during the update, how it can be used and its Recommendations for voluntary, collaborative actions to improve understanding and stewardship of Oregon’s nearshore resources that fall into three broad categories: 1) education and outreach; 2) research and monitoring; 3) management and policy.
