Citizen Fire Academy: Home Protection and Fuels Reduction Workshop

Hopkins Demonstration Forest

Saturday, February 18, 2017 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

This workshop is for woodland owners and others living in or near woodland areas. It will focus on how to assess fire risk around rural homes and in forest/landscape areas with wildfire hazards. The goal is to help you and your community prepare for the next fire season. Learn about the three main components of fire risk and about risk mapping and evaluation at the community level. Field activities include conducting a fuels reduction “audit” on sites with buildings as well as forested areas. Learn how to:
•Evaluate and treat fuel hazards to create defensible space according to “Home Ignition Zone Recommendations”.
•Evaluate fuel loads, fire hazards, and principles of fire-resistant forests.
•Evaluate high risk situations (e.g., heavy slash with ladder fuels).

Field examples will include a woodland after fuels reduction treatments and a forest that has not been treated.

This workshop is in conjunction with the final session of the Citizen Fire Academy, a volunteer training program to help citizens become leaders in wildfire preparedness in their community.

Registration is required by February 15. The cost is $15 for transportation and workshop materials. Participants should dress for the field and bring their own lunch. Coffee and refreshments will be provided.

Please call Jean to register at 503-655-8631 or jean.bremer@oregonstate.edu.
