Younger & Thinner - perspectives on meaningful metrics for tracking Arctic sea ice

Thursday, November 16, 2017 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Extensive loss of Arctic sea ice is linked to significant ecosystem, economic  and food security change, with impacts that reach outside the Arctic. While remote sensing of sea ice enables tracking large scale changes in sea ice, a regional and local scale perspective provides insight on how sea ice change impacts northern communities, and natural resources. I will share insights from over a decade of knowledge co-production with Alaska native subsistence hunters on sea ice change, and discuss the importance of including locally relevant perspectives for developing appropriate metrics to track impacts of climate change.
