OMSI Earth Day Celebration

What's Your Nature?

Saturday, April 22, 2017 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM

To celebrate Earth Day, OMSI and The Nature Conservancy are kicking off a conversation about connections between people and nature called "What's Your Nature?"  Nature lovers visiting the museum will share what the natural world means to them, learn how we are all connected to it and why it is important to our lives.

From 10am-2pm, join us in the Auditorium for special Earth Day craft activities and science demonstrations for the whole family. OMSI educators will present stage shows every 30 minutes starting at 10am, including Musical Tesla Coils, Elephant's Toothpaste, and Whoosh Cannons.

Beginning at 2:30pm, we will host a series of Pecha Kucha style lightning talks with local scientists and find out what Nature means to them.

2:30pm, Lightning Talks with:

  • Dave Stone, PhD, Associate Professor of Food Science and Technology at Oregon State University, and Director of the OSU Food Innovation Center
  • Steve Hammond, PhD, Chief Scientist of the NOAA Ocean Exploration and Research Program
  • Kerry Metlen, Forest Ecologist at The Nature Conservancy

3:30pm, Lightning Talks with:

  • Tassia Owen, Terra Project Scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center
  • Allison Aldous, Freshwater Scientist at The Nature Conservancy
  • Jalene Littlejohn, Founder of Samara Group LLC and member of the Oregon Invasive Species Council, the West Willamette Restoration Partnership, and the Oregon Bee Project
  • Mace Vaughan, Co-Director of the Pollinator Program at the Xerces Society

In addition, explore the museum (admission required) and engage with OMSI’s education team as well as local scientists to learn new and exciting things about the Earth.

Not able to be there but still want to participate? Upload your “What’s Your Nature?” photos to nature.org/earthday or submit them directly to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter between April 1 and May 31.
