WiFO: A Hybrid Wi-Fi and Free-Space Optical Communication System
With the explosive growth of network access from smart phones and tablets, providing adequate bandwidth for Wi-Fi networks is increasingly critical. In this paper, we describe the architecture and implementation of WiFO, a novel communication system that integrates both RF (radio frequency) and FSO (free space optic) technologies. WiFO aims to increase the wireless capacities while retaining the mobility offered by the existing Wi-Fi systems. Our preliminary investigation demonstrates the advantages of WiFO via the performance evaluation of a prototype. Specifically, we show the WiFO’s network architecture, channel characteristics  and an optimized resource allocation scheme.
