Visualizaing the Spread of Fracking Wells in Texas with EventMap: an Application for Exploring Geolocated Time Series Data
EventMap is a tool for interactively visualizing geolocated events. It was written to determine if a high-level language such as Python is a reasonable choice for implementing a bespoke visualization tool. The primary data set used for events is fracking wells across Texas from 1990 to 2014, combined with map and Census data gathered and processed by Python scripts. Implementation of the tool chain is described, with emphasis on features written in OpenGL for visually exploring the data. Performance and lessons learned are discussed, along with libraries used.
