Helping the US to Build Bigger, Taller and Smarter with Wood: The TallWood Design Institute

Wednesday, September 27, 2017 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

This presentation will bring you up to speed on the who, why and what of the College of Forestry’s newest and shiniest entity, the TallWood Design Institute. Iain Macdonald will describe what TDI seeks to accomplish and the ways it hopes to do it. We will begin with an overview of the mass timber world, traveling rapidly from mainland Europe, through the wet left part of Canada and down to Oregon, the current proud epicenter of US efforts to build bigger and taller with the renewable resource that we all know and love. We will dive into some current projects and plans for the future, including an update on what will soon be taking shape out by the barn.

Iain Macdonald is the Associate Director of the TallWood Design Institute. A native of Scotland, he has spent close to 20 years working in and with the wood products industry, first in export sales and later in training and industry development with the University of British Columbia’s Centre for Advanced Wood Processing, which he managed for nine years.
