WSE Seminar Series: Dr. Nathan Kotlarewski, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Timber Design and Product Engineering

Industrial Design in the Tasmanian Hardwood Industry

Tuesday, October 24, 2017 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Nathan Kotlarewski is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow from the University of Tasmania, Australia. An Industrial Designer, Nathan’s PhD New Product Development for Papua New Guinea Balsa to Improve Smallholder Livelihoods demonstrated the impact Design and Product Development can have in the forest industry for developing novel timber products for commercial markets. At the University of Tasmania, he conducts research in the Australian Research Council Centre for Forest Value, the Centre for Sustainable Architecture with Wood and the School of Architecture and Design. His research focuses on Tasmania’s hardwood plantation estate, which is expected to supply of three million cubic metres of logs per annum. This presents an opportunity for the development and diversification of innovative timber products and applications that take advantage of this available resource. Current projects are investigating the material properties of young hardwood plantation timber from its strength to its machinability. The manipulation of Tasmanian hardwoods with contemporary technologies such as 3D printing, laser cutting and CNC fabrication can provoke innovative product development. This new knowledge and approach to a traditionally driven industry will be used to inform the design process and design decisions to develop new applications in the built environment.
