Exploring the Submarine Canyons of the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary

Thursday, January 18, 2018 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Communication of science to the public is crucial in today’s challenging climate. Founded by Robert Ballard, the Ocean Exploration Trust is dedicated to ocean exploration and public outreach.  OET owns and operates the exploration vesselNautilus.  As part of this year’s season, teams from NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center and Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary (in partnership with the Quinault Indian Nation and the Quileute Tribe) visited the sanctuary. Both ROV and AUV technologies were deployed to characterize deep-sea coral and sponge communities in the Quinault, Quileute and Juan de Fuca canyons.  Additionally, the expedition documented the wreck of the former-USS Bugara (a WW II era Baleo class sub) and sampled to further the understanding of the impact of ocean acidification in this sensitive area.
