Introducing the new Oregon Coordinating Council on Ocean Acidification and Hypoxia (OAH Council)

Thursday, January 25, 2018 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Of the multitude of challenges facing the marine environment and resources, ocean acidification and hypoxia (OAH) are particularly threatening to Oregon’s healthy marine ecosystem.  In recognition of the realized and potential impacts of OAH, the Oregon legislature has created the Oregon Coordinating Council on Ocean Acidification and Hypoxia (OAH Council) to evaluate how Oregon can best face, adapt to and mitigate these impacts.  This seminar will introduce the newly minted Council (which will have met for the first time earlier in the day) and the members who will help develop recommendations and guidance to the state and coastal stakeholders on how to respond to the persistent and intensifying threats of OAH. The seminar will begin with a brief overview of the science and policy surrounding OAH in Oregon, and will be followed by a panel discussion reviewing perspectives on OAH impacts, needs, and desired outcomes on the work of the Council.  There will be significant time for questions from the audience, to help shape the discussion with the panel.  Panelists:

•    Dr. Kristen Sheeran, Carbon Policy Advisor to Governor Kate Brown

•    Frank Barcellos, Oregon Department of Agriculture

•    Liu Xin, Oregon Oyster Company

•    Karen Tarnow, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality

•    Dr. Aaron Galloway, Oregon Institute of Marine Biology
