Backscatter, National Marine Sanctuaries, and the NOAA Ship RAINIER: Lessons Learned

Thursday, March 8, 2018 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM

NOAA Ship RAINIER is an American Hydrographic Survey Vessel homeported in Newport, OR. The ship’s mission is to map the ocean to aid maritime commerce, improve coastal resilience, and understand the marine environment. For the 2017 field season RAINIER worked with the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary and the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary to collect backscatter data for benthic habitat mapping and classification, in addition to updating the nautical charts. This presentation will cover: What is backscatter? Adjusting mission priorities, the project areas, and lessons learned throughout the field season.
