Beat the Wave! Land Use Planning for a Local Tsunami

Thursday, May 24, 2018 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Learn how several Oregon coastal communities are beginning to plan for a local tsunami event through land use planning strategies and regulations. The Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development (DLCD), in partnership with the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI), is currently collaborating with twelve high-risk coastal communities to develop and implement land use resilience measures and strategies focused on the Cascadia Subduction Zone tsunami hazard through their local land use planning and hazard mitigation programs. This type of land use planning can influence the development of the landscape over time with consideration and understanding of tsunami hazards. This talk will highlight new tsunami evacuation modeling and data tools DOGAMI is developing, which help to emphasize evacuation vulnerabilities and mitigation opportunities in each specific community. DLCD is using this data along with tsunami land use strategies, to support resilience efforts at the local level. The speaker will provide perspectives on resilience strategies, possible outcomes, obstacles and successes of this tsunami project.
