Documenting Ecosystems: Soundscapes and Music for Percussion

Presentation by Lisa Schonberg

Thursday, November 2, 2017 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Lisa Schonberg is a musician, teacher, and natural historian living in Portland, Oregon. Her practice uses field recording, writing, and music composition to document and bring more attention to topics concerning ecology, endangered species, and threatened habitats, often through multimedia collaborations.

In this presentation Schonberg will discuss her background and the goals of her work, and she will share documentation and audio samples to help outline her creative process. Schonberg will conclude her presentation with a percussion performance of a work in progress based on ant acoustics in the Brazilian Amazon.

Lisa Schonberg started playing drums as a child in Staten Island, NY, studied ecology and entomology through college and graduate school, and has since traveled extensively to carry out fieldwork and perform. She integrates her interests through creative documentation of soundscapes, insects, and habitat. Lisa's place-based compositions are performed by her percussion and noise ensemble Secret Drum Band, her duo Coordination, and in solo performance. She recently documented the native Hawaiian bees in a publication and compositions called The Hylaeus Project. Lisa co-directs Environmental Impact Statement, which interjects art into environmental policy. She is the author of The DIY Guide to Drums and Fieldguided, a series of books on insects, and is on the staff of Tom Tom Magazine. She has been a member of Explode into Colors, Kickball, and STLS, and has performed with Tara Jane Oneil, Mirah, Thao With The Get Down Stay Down, Tuneyards, The Need, and Erase Errata. She has performed at MOMA PS1, the Centre Pompidou, High Desert Test Sites, The Los Angeles Museum of Natural History, and the Time-Based Arts Festival. Secret Drum Band's album DYNAMICS was released in August 2017 on XRAY Records.
