The Red Door Project Presents: Hand Up

Saturday, December 2, 2017 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM

Oregon State University School of Arts and Communication, Oregon State University Theatre, and the August Wilson Red Door Project present The New Black Fest’s Hands Up. This production is sponsored by the NAACP Corvallis/Albany Branch #1118. Performances will be held December 2 at 7:30 pm and December 3 at 2:00 pm in the Withycombe Hall Main Stage, in Withycombe Hall, 30th and Campus Way on the Oregon State University Corvallis Campus.

Hands Up is an intimate, relevant production that has been stirring both theater-going and non-theater-going audiences. Directed by Kevin Jones, and produced in Portland, Oregon, beginning in 2016, Hands Up is a set of seven monologues originally commissioned by The New Black Fest in the wake of the police shootings of Mike Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, John Crawford III in Beavercreek, Ohio, and others. The monologues explore the psyche of six black men and one black woman who have been negatively impacted by interactions with law enforcement.

Hands Up shifts the conversations that can be had in communities because the truth of the play and the immediacy of its portrayal have created a kind of intimacy among people who were strangers 90 minutes ago when they sat down together in the dark. Something has cracked open. As a result, discussions following performances have been, in audience members’ words, “transformative” and “unforgettable” and “necessary.”  Every Hands Up performance is followed by an expertly and compassionately facilitated talkback by Kevin Jones and Lesli Mones, who are the founders of the August Wilson Red Door Project. The purpose of these talkbacks is healing.

Tickets for this performance of Hands Up are free to the public. Make your reservations through http://reddoorproject.org/hands-up#tickets
