Cancelled - Not Just Reform: The Transformation of European Judaism

Lecture by Dr. David Sorkin

Monday, April 23, 2018 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM

European Judaism underwent a radical transformation in the nineteenth century.  The advent of Reform Judaism in Central Europe was one of a series of seismic events that altered the entire landscape of Judaism across the continent.  The range of Judaisms at the end of the nineteenth century represented new versions of older traditions; none constituted a simple continuation of "tradition.

Dr. Sorkin is the Lucy G. Moses Professor of Modern Jewish History at Yale University. He is interested in finding new approaches to the intersection of Jewish and European history since the 16th century. He is currently writing a history of Jewish emancipation in Europe (tentative title:  “Interminable Emancipation:  European Jews and the Search for Equality, 1550-2000”).
