The Deep Sea and Me: Tales from the bottom and ends of the earth

Tuesday, April 24, 2018 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

The deep sea is dark, cold, often remote and seemingly part of another world.  However, it is part of our lives.  The deep sea off of Oregon provides a wealth of food to our tables and supports our economy.  It provides nutrients that fuel our shallow fisheries and helps keep our climate moderate.  It is also an epicenter of biodiversty.  Vast canyons, hot vents and cold seeps all exist just off our shore supporting a wealth of unique life and we are just beginning to appreciate the role, distribution, and importance of these habitats.  Yet the deep sea is facing new and expanded use by humans. We, as a public, will be asked what we want the fate of this habitat to be over the coming years; decisions that will impact our coast for decades or longer.  This talk will be a tale of discovery, excitement, and the science that goes on in the deep sea off Oregon  and even how we can study Antarctica to understand how our coast will respond to change.
