The Boom and Bust Cycles of Rivers: The vital interconnections that rivers share with the land, the sky, and us.

Speaker: Sean Fleming, College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, Oregon State University.

RSVP for the Next Science Pub

Sean W. Fleming examines how mathematics and physics can reveal the hidden secrets of rivers, and offers insights into the deep relationships they have with landscapes, ecosystems, and societies. Drawing on his recent Princeton book, "Where the River Flows: Scientific Reflections on Earth's Waterways," he looks at topics like why rivers run where they do; how the same river can flood one year, yet dry up the next; how we forecast floods and water supplies; the impacts of climate change; and even whether rivers have “memories.” He also explores how science can help address the threats our watersheds face.

Fleming is a geophysicist with extensive experience in operational and research hydrology.  He runs a data science consultancy and holds affiliate positions at Oregon State University, the University of British Columbia, and Los Alamos National Laboratory.
