Best Selling Author and Noted Human Rights Activist John Prendergast to Speak at OSU
Title of Talk: "Darfur and Beyond: What We Can Do to Confront the Human Rights Crisis in Africa"
Friday, April 4, 2008 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Since 2003, the government of Sudan has murdered 400,000 of its own civilians in the Darfur region, and has forced 2.5-3 million people to flee from their homes and become refugees. The Janjaweed
paramilitary murders, rapes, and takes victims into sexual slavery every day. The refugees face death each day as they suffer from starvation, disease, and violence in the camps. This event will
address these issues and empower people to take action to end this violence. On the evening of Friday, April 4, 2008, noted human rights activist and author, John Prendergast, will be giving a public
lecture at OSU. Prendergast has experience working with a vast network of both Democrat and Republican political leaders, including his work as a White House Aide for former President Clinton.
Prendergast also works with socially conscious celebrities including Don Cheadle and Angelia Jolie. Prendergast has established himself as one of the most important shapers of public and official
opinion regarding Darfur. In addition to touring Darfur and many other African countries, he has spoken on many campuses, given countless interviews, and published more than a dozen books, including
the current best-seller (co-authored by Don Cheadle), Not on Our Watch: The Mission to End Genocide In Darfur and Beyond. Prendergast helped establish the ENOUGH Project, a group that seeks to inform
the public about genocide, and to counter its recurrence. He is also senior advisor to the International Crisis Group. Our aim is to make as many students, staff, and community members as possible
aware of this public, inspiring and important event regarding one of the most significant international conflicts of our time. Host: OSU Students Taking Action Now: Darfur (STAND) Co-Sponsors of the
