The H-1B Visa: Temporary Non-Immigrant Work Status in the United States
Workshop for International Students and Scholars
Monday, May 19, 2008 4:00 PM - 5:50 PM
The H-1B is an employer-sponsored, non-immigrant category which allows persons who are not citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. to work for up to six years in a specialty occupation. The
employer must apply for the H-1B on behalf of the prospective H-1B employee through the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Because the procedures and record keeping required
for the H-1B are complex, an attorney or other trained person will be necessary to complete the paperwork. This general, introductory meeting is offered for OSU international students and scholars
and will cover topics related to obtaining the H-1B visa such as the following:
Employee eligibility criteria
Employer's role
Types of jobs appropriate for H-1B
Salary guidelines
Application timing issues
Updates on pending legislation
Options for F-1 or J-1 students and scholars
This meeting is *NOT* designed to explain how a person can apply for the H-1B him- or herself. This meeting is also *NOT* designed for individuals who will be hired at OSU in H-1B status.
