"Young Worker Health and Safety – Reducing Workplace Injuries and Illnesses"

2008 Spring Corporate Sponsored Seminar Event

Friday, May 30, 2008 10:00 AM - 11:45 AM

Featured speakers this year will be Laurel Kincl, University of Oregon and Diane Bush, University of California at Berkeley. Research indicates that young workers are injured at higher rates than adults—despite the fact the workers under age 18 are prohibited from doing the most hazardous types of work. Young workers tend to receive minimal or inadequate training on safety and health issues and have unique risk factors for injury. Lack of awareness of these issues and appropriate resources extends to employers, parents, educators, and health-care providers. Other states have established partnerships, resource centers and programs to build state capacity for efforts to improve young worker safety and health. Learn about the scope of the problem and what young worker safety initiatives are underway in other states. We will focus on what is currently happening in Oregon, including approaches for improving safety and health awareness among young workers and their employers, and initiatives being planned by the newly formed Oregon Young Worker Health and Safety Coalition. Finally, we will discuss what research is needed to improve young worker injury data and to evaluate the effectiveness of intervention approaches. Please respond via e-mail the number of personnel that are planning to attend from your organization. A catered lunch will be provided immediately following the presentation. Please consider parking at the OSU Football Stadium where a number of "PAY AND DISPLAY" Parking Meters are located. You can then take the OSU Shuttle to the Memorial Union and take a short walk to Kidder Hall.
