Role of Soil Iron Nodules/Concretions in the Soil Carbon Cycle

Presenter - Christophe Moni, Post Doc, Oregon State University

Monday, September 29, 2008 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Abstract: Soil nodules are indurate bodies formed by the accumulation of iron and manganese oxides as a result of periodic changes of the soil redox potential. However, even though nodules are common soil features, they are partly excluded by conventional soil analysis that rejects coarse element > 2mm and the nature of associated OC, as well as, their ability to store substantial amounts of OC has seldom been investigated. Our results show that organic carbon associated with iron nodules could represents a significant amount of the total soil organic matter and display an extremely high turnover time.
