In this presentation, I will discuss recent structural and operational improvements made at Snake and Columbia River dams for salmonid smolt and adult fish passage, the smolt transportation (barging) program, migration time and survival for smolts and adults migrating through the hydropower system from PIT tag studies, and compare their migrational performance now with estimates of migration time and survival from earlier years. I will also discuss the apparent shift in migration strategy for Snake River fall Chinook salmon from one dominated by ocean-type life history to a reservoir-type life history.
