Biodiversity Working for Farmers Dinner and Night Walk

Tuesday, July 21, 2009 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM

The researchers at the Farmscaping for Beneficials (FSB) Project of the Integrated Plant Protection Center (IPPC) at Oregon State University (OSU), The USDA Western Region IPM Center Functional Agro-Biodiversity Work Group (the FAB Work Group), the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, the National Center for Appropriate Technology and Gathering Together Farm have planned an extraordinary evening of  ecological discovery, a tour of biodiversity practices at Gathering Together Farm, and a rare night walk all combined with a delicious gourmet organic dinner!  We are farmers, conservationists, scientists and agricultural support personnel from the western USA that make up the FAB Work Group.   We meet on a regular basis to promote and develop ecological practices that enhance on-farm biodiversity that can be adopted on farms in our region and we would like you to join us Tuesday, July 21st from 6-10 PM at Gathering Together Farm, in Philomath OR for this exceptional evening.

This is an opportunity for you to see progressive biodiversity enhancement practices that are driving sustainable agriculture forward in the 21st century, to have access to some of the specialists who are helping us understand the role and importance of local on-farm biodiversity and learn first-hand what night-active animals contribute to the vital web of biodiversity and crop production at Gathering Together Farm (GTF).  You will be enjoying this intimate snapshot of our local agricultural biodiversity over a gourmet organic dinner prepared by expert chef, JC Mersmann.  GTF (www.gatheringtogetherfarm.com)  is owned by John Eveland and Sally Brewer and has been a certified organic vegetable farm for over 20 years.  They are a 300 share CSA with an on-farm restaurant and market.  They attend 7 local farmers markets, and sale to local restaurants and wholesale markets. The farm consists of several small, parcels of land, hugging the Mary's River, that total about 65 acres. They have a four year old beetle bank and abundant blooming habitat all season long partially due to their long-time partnership with Wild Garden Seeds, which grows certified organic flower and vegetable seeds on site.
