OSU ASCE Chapter hosts the annual Host A Student Dinner with the Oregon Chapter. Students from OSU, PSU, OIT, and UP, in addition to area practicing engineers are all invited. This is a great opportunity for students to meet and network with Civil Engineers!
6pm social; 7pm dinner
Speaker: Dr. Tona Rodriguez-Nikl, OSU School of Civil and Construction Engineering
In the civil engineering profession there is a well-deserved and growing interest in sustainability. However, there are varying ideas about what “sustainability” means and there are an overwhelming number of products, services, and research results claiming to be “green” or “sustainable”. How do engineers, experts in their area of practice, but certainly not experts in sustainability, choose among alternatives or know they are doing something useful? The main aim of this talk is to sort through current trends to bring together a coherent and useful picture of sustainability and to suggest some simple questions any engineer can ask to determine whether the option he or she is pursuing is indeed sustainable. Examples from many areas of civil engineering will be used to illustrate various aspects of sustainability.
Tona Rodriguez-Nikl is an Instructor in the School of Civil & Construction Engineering at Oregon State University. Dr. Rodriguez-Nikl’s educational background includes Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of California, San Diego, where he developed and tested carbon fiber retrofits to protect reinforced concrete buildings against bombblasts. Dr. Rodriguez-Nikl has worked in industry for WJE in the San Francisco area performingstructural evaluations, forensic investigations, and structural analyses. He teaches statics, structural dynamics, and a freshman computation course. Dr. Rodriguez-Nikl is a member of ASCE and the American Concrete Institute where he serves on committees in Sustainability of Concrete, Fiber Reinforced Polymer Reinforcement, and Concrete with Recycled Materials as well as the Structural Engineering Institute’s Engineering Philosophy committee. He is also a corresponding member of SEI’s Sustainability Committee and works locally with the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition. Dr. Rodriguez-Nikl is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer in California.
