EQUINE Series
If you are a 4-H Horse Leader, 4-H Horse Parent or older Junior Leader, you won’t want to miss any of these workshops. In an effort to significantly improve horse knowledge and preparedness, Deschutes County’s experienced leaders and horse experts will be sharing their knowledge to help your 4-H, Horse, and 4-H Horse experiences improve. We can only help if you participate.
Workshops are scheduled during the fall and winter months at regular intervals for your convenience. This series began on Thursday, October 22nd, followed by the second Thursday of November and December, 11/12 and 12/10, and by the second and fourth Thursday in January, February and March: 1/14, 1/28, 2/11, 2/25, 3/11 & 3/25. All workshops are tentatively scheduled on the fairgrounds, some will be classroom sessions and some will be held in an arena setting; 6:30 – 8 PM.There will be a $5 charge for each workshop – fees will be collected at the workshop.
Topics will include: Lesson plans for riding meetings, How to help your child/member practice, Being prepared for the horse show, What minimum expectations are there for Showmanship and Equitation, How to enjoy the “complete” 4-H horse experience, Basic Emergency Equine First Aid, Necessary husbandry, including feed, maintenance, and veterinary needs, Appropriate tack, clothing and equipment, identifying a horse/member team that just won’t work, AND lots more.

November 12 will be focused on proper tack its use, basic requirements for clothing and safety, what are the “must haves” and what is optional as well as some tips about how to acquire those basic needs as inexpensive as possible. December 10 will be tips on teaching horse judging and horse bowl skills as well as other basic and necessary knowledge. How to get kids excited about learning and why it’s so critical to their success. Lots of great hands on tools.
