Benton Homeless Connect - Volunteers Needed

Friday, March 9, 2012 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM

Have you ever passed by a homeless person or family on the street and wondered what you could do to help out? Benton County Homeless Connect is just that opportunity, and organizers are seeking volunteers for an event this spring.

Benton Homeless Connect is scheduled March 11 at the First United Methodist Church Community Center, 1165 NW Monroe Ave., in Corvallis. It is one way to address issues outlined in the Benton County Ten Year Plan to Address Issues Surrounding Housing and Homelessness, which was adopted in 2009 by the Benton County Board of Commissioners.

The event is based on national criteria established by the Interagency Council on Homelessness. The goal for the 2011 event is to provide essential services to Benton County’s homeless population while also providing the community with a better understanding of the plight of the homeless and those on the verge of homelessness. This year’s event will include:

• Lions Club medical screening;

• Medical Teams International Dental Van;

• Direct access to social service agencies that will be on hand to help guests with housing, food and other essential services; and

• Access to haircuts, pet services, bike repair and more.

There are many opportunities for interested volunteers to get involved. For more information – including detailed volunteer opportunities and an online signup form – those interested can go online to http://www.co.benton.or.us.
