God Talk in the Public Presidency

Courtney Campbell and Amy Koehlinger

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Can and should Presidential candidates expressly  discuss their religious beliefs in the public square?

Our presentation focuses on two such examples, the 1960 speech of John Kennedy, a Catholic, before a Protestant audience, and the 2008 speech of Mitt Romney, Mormon, before an evangelical audience.

These speeches help us understand questions about religious liberty, separation of church and state, and the role of religious discourse in public and presidential settings.
