History of SAtech
Two years ago, Ed Cabellon initiated the first SAtech UnConference at Boston University. The purpose was to bring student affairs practitioners together to discuss technology in the field of student affairs. Topics in the past included issues of social media and connecting students to virtual communities, managing online teaching modules for transfer students and learning about the various mobile applications students are using today. The UnConference was a huge success and the demand for similar opportunities across the country started to rise. This year #SAtech has grown exponentially. #SAtech UnConferences will be taking place in at least eight cities throughout the spring and summer. The first will be held in Corvallis, Oregon, at Oregon State University.
What is an UnConference?
The concept of an UnConference is novel. At a traditional conference, there is a set of programs pre-scheduled and participants are able to choose which of these programs they would like to attend. At an UnConference, programs are not pre-established. At the beginning of the UnConference participants determine what topics they would like to speak/learn about. Then as participants divide into various topic areas, discussions grow from the knowledge in the room. This concept makes the transmission of knowledge and thought more fluid and organic than most sit down lecture-style conference programs.
