Linearization Techniques for VCO-based ADCs
Voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) based ADCs possess several properties that make them highly desirable over conventional voltage domain ADCs. In addition to first order noise shaping the quantization noise, VCO ADCs provide anti-aliasing to the input signal. However, the SNDR of an open-loop VCO-based ADC is severely distortion limited by the voltage-to-frequency tuning characteristics of the VCO.

Various techniques have already been proposed to overcome the VCO non-linearity problem. This work examines each of the conventional approaches and points out their limitations. Two new VCO-ADC architectures are proposed that overcome the limitations of the conventional approaches.
