Acoustic Assisted Magnetic Recording
Energy assisted magnetic recording, represented by heat-assisted and microwave-assisted magnetic recording nowadays, is a leading driving force that enables large increase in the storage capacity. However, I have developed a novel technology, acoustic assisted magnetic recording, in which the data is recorded in a 50 nm continuous magnetostrictive Galfenol thin film with the assistance of surface acoustic wave (SAW). It uses strain to lower the coercivity of the medium and allows data to be recorded at a smaller field. The key advantages of this technology are ease of fabrication and low cost. It also holds the potential to implement practical acoustic-assisted solid state magnetic memory.
