Harry Potter and Christianity

Why Does J.K. Rowling Quote The Bible?

Monday, May 13, 2013 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

When the Harry Potter series first appeared, some American audiences assumed that the books were anti-Christian.  Such a sentiment became impossible to sustain after the publication of the last book in the series, which quotes verses from the New Testament at important points.

Interpreting Rowling’s use of those verses through the lens of her treatment of death throughout the series, Kavka (who taught the first large classes at a public university on Harry Potter and religion in the US) will argue that Rowling offers her readers a more worldly and life-affirming sort of Christianity than previous British fantasy literature had provided.
