Modeling the Melting Mantle at Mid-Ocean Ridges

Thursday, April 3, 2014 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Modeling the Melting Mantle at Mid-Ocean Ridges

New petrologic-geodynamic models provide insight into the crustal accretion processes at mid-ocean ridges (MORs). This talk will focus on the development of combined petrologic and geodynamic models, which investigate the processes of melt initiation, migration, and crystallization. The model is applied to the Siqueiros transform fault on the East Pacific Rise, where it is tested against geophysical evidence for crustal thickening and major element geochemical observations. Finally, critical outstanding questions and future directions will be explored.
