Tuberculosis, Immigration Policy, and Human Rights

Friday, October 18, 2013 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Joan Paluzzi, Western Oregon Univeristy, is a medical anthropologist interested in the social epidemiology of tuberculosis and access to health care.  She has conducted research in Chile and Venezuela, and is currently examining the intersections between TB and US immigration policy.  Although the US continues to see overall declines in this treatable, curable infection...undocumented migrants with TB remain excluded from the overall statitstical profile despite some serious concerns about their welfare and issues of contagion.  This is a discussion of TB across borders but it also seeks to illustrate the challenge of doing research within the Immigration and Customs Enforcement system where even basic inquiries are met with "Sorry, we can't discuss this, it is an issue of national security."
