Retroreflectivity of Signs

a Traffic Safety Workshop

Monday, October 28, 2013 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

This workshop will present the concepts and standards associated with sign retroreflectivity. The FHWA has required that state and local highway agencies must have a plan and program defined and in place by June 2014 to assess and manage sign retroreflectivity for the agency.

The workshop will present the fundamentals of human vision and retroreflective materials. It will demonstrate technology that can be used to measure retroreflectivity. We will present the various methods that can be used to meet the FHWA mandate for a program to establish and maintain the retroreflectivity of signs by June 2014. The requirements for each method will be covered in sufficient detail to support selection of the best method for a jurisdiction. Supporting data and methodology, such as sign inventory programs will also be addressed.

The workshop is aimed at providing local jurisdiction personnel with enough information to select and implement the best method for their jurisdiction to meet the FHWA requirement.

Instructors are all local professionals from jurisdictions that include FHWA, ODOT, Oregon Counties and OSU, as well as representatives from 3M.
