Estimating Exposure To and Potential Cardiovascular Benefits of Dietary Nitrate and Nitrite

Friday, March 14, 2014 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

"Estimating Exposure To and Potential Cardiovascular Benefits of Dietary Nitrate and Nitrite" Norman Hord, PhD, MPH, RD, Associate Professor of Nutrition, Celia Strickland and G. Kenneth Austin III Endowed Professor, College of Public Health and Human Sciences, Oregon State University

Dr. Hord employs a broad background in nutrition, dietetics, public health and biology to address the role of dietary factors in cancer and cardiovascular disease risk. The goal of his research program is to investigate the interaction between colon epithelial cell genotype and dietary factors in cancer risk.

Current projects include:

1. the identification of the transformation stage in colon carcinogenesis at which dietary nitrates and nitrites influence risk, and

2. Efficacy of dietary nitrates, nitrites and other plant-based food components to lower blood pressure in adults with hypertension.

He participates with a large collaborative group of physicians, Registered Dietitians and scientists to assess the efficacy of an energy-restricted ketogenic diet on tumor metabolism in adults with glioblastoma multiforme, the most prevalent type of brain cancer in adults
