Improving Operations to Remain Competitive and Profitable

Wood Industry Week @ WERC

This 3-day hands-on workshop will be held at the USDA Forest Service's Wood Education and Resource Center (WERC) in Princeton, WV.  The agenda will include presentations on wood technology (how wood anatomy and structure impact product quality), mill layout & optimization, lean manufacturing, theory of constraints, and quality control tools and topics including Pareto analysis, checksheets, flowcharts, cause-and-effect diagrams, lumber size control, an introduction to design of experiments, and statistical process control (SPC); particular emphasis will be given to SPC and hands-on use of the QC tools using familiar software such as Excel.  The workshop will include time in the classroom setting followed by visits to local mills where participants will have the opportunity to apply the information presented in the classroom.
