The Science of Skin

Speaker: Arup Indra, Oregon State College of Pharmacy

Americans spend billions to beautify their outermost organ — to make it softer and younger, to erase wrinkles, conceal freckles, fake a tan, flaunt a tattoo. In our obsession with skin’s cosmetic qualities, it’s easy to forget the role it plays as nature’s biohazard suit. It defends our bodies against a barrage of environmental and biological assaults, from solar ultra-violet (UV) radiation and industrial pollution to extreme heat and deadly pathogens.

While our skin has evolved sophisticated responses to injuries and insults, it sometimes displays chronic or even deadly abnormalities. More cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the United States every year than of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer combined. And while skin cancer rates vary geographically, the nation’s highest are in the Pacific Northwest.

At the March 10 Corvallis Science Pub, Arup Indra, associate professor in the Oregon State University College of Pharmacy, will present information about skin development, composition and disease risks. He’ll discuss what he and other researchers have revealed about how skin cells progress from a state of normalcy to chronic eczema or a pre-cancerous condition.

An expert in skin development and cell biology, Indra received his Ph.D. at Jadavpor University in Kolkata, India, before doing post-doctoral research at the Institut de la Génétique et de la Biologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire in France. He accepted a position at Oregon State in 2005.
