Identification  of Insects in Christmas Trees   Workshop and Tour    



Schedule of the day:


  8:30 am ‒ Chal Landgren, OSU Extension Christmas Tree Specialist.  Welcome and overview. Current aphid pests and study evaluating beneficial insects for their control


  9:30 am ‒Glenn Ahrens, OSU Extension Forestry Agent. Discussion of past aphid damage, controls and results. Group discussion of beneficial insects and aphid control.


  10:00 am ‒ Paul Jepson, Director, Integrated Plant Protection Center, OSU. IPM framework for aphid control on Christmas trees


  Break – coffee and refreshments are provided (displays of predators and aphids)


  11:00 ‒John Maurer, Evergreen Growers Supply. Describe and ID key aphid predators and release protocols (Aphidius, Aphidoletes, ladybugs, and lacewings).


  11:30 ‒ Jana Lee, Research Entomologist, USDA. Current research efforts in bio-control on field conifers, scouting tips for field, ID of Beneficial’s – both released and local (keys for participants)


  Lunch ‒provided with registration


  1:00-4:00 pm ‒ Field site tour of field where beneficial predators have been released. Check for presence/absence. Discuss scouting and ID.
